Women’s quota Bill: Cong leader accuses BJP of taking U-turn

However, the MLA accused the Centre of making a “complete U-turn” by proposing to bypass both census and the delimitation process. Instead, he alleged, the Centre was pushing a “flat formula” to increase parliamentary seats without clearly outlining the framework in the official draft.

Shekhar said that the revised proposal disproportionately increased the number of male MPs. “Under the new numbers being discussed, only about 102 additional seats will go to women while around 205 will be added to the male count. This defeats the spirit of 33 per cent reservation,” he added.

The MLA said that the solution was straightforward — implement 33 per cent reservation within the existing 543-member Lok Sabha, ensuring around 181 seats for women without delay that was going to be caused due to a census or delimitation.

He accused the Central Government of politicising the issue ahead of the forthcoming Assembly elections, particularly in states like West Bengal and Tamil Nadu. He alleged that the timing of the special parliamentary session was aimed at influencing women voters.

The MLA said the Congress supported women’s reservation but demanded its immediate and transparent implementation. “If the government is sincere, it should act now rather than delay it on the pretext of following procedure,” he added.
