For the first time, all polling stations in the civic body elections will be managed exclusively by women personnel. From handling electronic voting machines (EVMs) and voter verification to conducting mock polls and managing polling booths, women polling parties will independently oversee every aspect of the election process.
The district administration has almost completed preparations for the elections. Election Officer and Nalagarh SDM Narendra Ahluwalia said women employees had been deployed at all polling stations to ensure free, fair and transparent elections. He added that the second rehearsal of 12 women polling parties had also been conducted successfully. During the rehearsal, officials were trained in EVM operations, technical procedures, voter identification, mock polling and Election Commission guidelines.
The move has generated a positive response across the area, with officials and residents viewing it as a major step towards enhancing women’s participation in democratic processes. Authorities believe the presence of women polling staff will encourage a larger turnout of women voters and create a more organised and comfortable environment at polling stations.
Special arrangements have also been made for the smooth conduct of the elections, while security of EVMs and law-and-order measures have been strengthened.
Solan DC Manmohan Sharma said women officers had been assigned to the Nalagarh civic polls as the exercise would conclude within a day, whereas male staff had been deployed for the panchayati raj institution elections spread over three days. He said the initiative would significantly boost women’s participation in the electoral process.
The Nalagarh Municipal Council reflects a strong women voter presence. Of the total electorate, women voters number 3,565, surpassing the 3,391 male voters. In eight of the nine wards, women voters outnumber men, with Ward 1 being the only exception where male voters exceed female voters by just two.
Officials hope the initiative will further motivate women voters, especially when 50 per cent seats in the civic body are reserved for women.
