The facility has been developed through a partnership between the university and Samagra Shiksha, Himachal Pradesh, under the World Bank-funded STARS Project of the Ministry of Education. The initiative aims to strengthen practical learning and skill development in the agriculture sector.
Vice-Chancellor Prof Rajeshwar Singh Chandel inaugurated the centre in the presence of statutory officers and faculty members associated with the project. Equipped with modern infrastructure, the facility includes an Internet of Things (IoT) lab, computer lab, greenhouse lab, STL lab and a classroom with a seating capacity for 40 students. It also features advanced resources such as drones, Meta Quest devices, tablets, hydroponics systems, rainwater harvesting units and soil testing kits.
Addressing the gathering, Prof Chandel said the centre would play a crucial role in equipping students with contemporary knowledge and practical skills in agriculture and allied sectors. He said the initiative was designed to develop technical expertise, hands-on experience and a professional approach among students, enabling them to meet emerging challenges in the field.
He added that the project aligned with the vision of the National Education Policy, 2020, which emphasised bridging the gap between academia and industry to improve educational quality and vocational competence. Highlighting the importance of skill development, he said fostering an entrepreneurial mindset and enhancing youth employability remained key priorities.
The collaboration between the university and Samagra Shiksha is aimed at providing practical agricultural training and promoting entrepreneurship among school students pursuing agriculture as a vocational subject. The project is expected to benefit more than 5,000 students from around 227 schools across the state, with a total outlay of approximately Rs 2.8 crore.
