United show by Congress before filing of nominations; total 20 candidates in fray

However, it is being seen as a show of political strength by the Congress in the town as the BJP had swept the last municipal elections but Mahajan claimed that it was a show of enthusiasm among the party cadre for the coming elections. He added that there was a strong wave in favour of the Congress and local residents were looking for a change in the civic body elections. He alleged that the poor performance of the outgoing BJP-supported Municipal Council would ensure the victory of the Congress-supported candidates, who after winning the elections would ensure an efficient delivery of civic amenities in the town.

The BJP-supported candidates had filed their nomination papers in three phases without much pomp and show. Three BJP candidates filed their nominations from Ward number 7, 8 and 9 on Saturday. Local MLA Ranbir Nikka is spearheading the BJP’s campaign and has selected the candidates for all nine wards. However, no senior BJP leader accompanied the candidates for filing their nomination papers.

The BJP has nominated Chirag Gupta, a traditional Congress supporter from Ward number 8. Gupta had switched loyalty to the BJP in the presence of the local MLA and Kangra Lok Sabha MP Rajiv Bharadwaj. Similarly, the Congress has nominated Ashwani Daffa, a BJP supporter from Ward number 9. Daffa had switched loyalty to the Congress on Friday evening in the presence of Ajay Mahajan.
