Union Minister lauds CSIR-IHBT’s role in boosting local economy

Dr Jitendra Singh, who is also and the vice-president of the CSIR, praised the institute for its pioneering work in stevia and tulip cultivation as well as its efforts to promote start-ups and entrepreneurship in the Himalayan region.

He said that the CSIR-IHBT had the potential to become a torchbearer of the Himalayan economy and it should continue to contribute towards the vision of “Viksit Bharat”. He emphasised inclusive development and said scientific research should directly benefit society and its outcomes must reach common people.

Dr Jitendra Singh visited an exhibition showcasing products and technologies developed by the institute. He also visited the institute’s selfie point created for public awareness and participated in activities related to the promotion of indigenous heeng (asafoetida) cultivation being undertaken by the CSIR-IHBT.

Institute Director Sudesh Kumar Yadav briefed the Union Minister on the institute’s major research programmes and outreach initiatives. He highlighted the success of the Aroma and Floriculture Missions, stating that these programmes were strengthening the local economy while promoting ecological sustainability in the Himalayan region.

N Kalaiselvi, Director General of the CSIR and secretary of the DSIR, highlighted recent technological advancements and scientific initiatives undertaken by the CSIR. She underscored the important role the CSIR-IHBT played in promoting the bio-economy through advanced scientific research and innovation and expressed confidence in the institute’s future endeavours.

Several technology transfer agreements were signed with Chandigarh Sweets Limited, Mohali; E-Hemp Stores Pvt Ltd, New Delhi; Praarabdh Society, Mandi; Kannav Biocreations Private Ltd, Una; Krishi Rasayan Private Ltd, Kolkata; and Parwaaz Organics, Jalandhar, on the occasion.

Besides, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed with the Himalayan Women, Awareness and Livelihood (HIMWAL) Society, Dehradun, to strengthen collaborative efforts in livelihood generation and community development.
