The fields of progressive farmers at Udaipur in Lahaul and Spiti are at present covered with colourful tulips in full bloom, presenting a striking landscape and highlighting the growing success of tulip bulb production in the cold desert region. The development is being viewed as a major achievement in diversifying agriculture in the tribal areas of Himachal Pradesh.
For the past three years, scientists of the CSIR-IHBT have been working closely with local farmers by supplying quality planting material, introducing scientific cultivation methods and offering continuous field-level technical support.
The institute has also been working in collaboration with the New Delhi Municipal Council in the field of tulip bulb production. Officials concerned say that the partnership is expected to strengthen the supply of premium quality tulip bulbs and reduce dependence on imported planting material in the country.
Sudesh Kumar Yadav, Director of the CSIR-IHBT, says that the climate of Lahaul, marked by prolonged winter and cool temperatures, is highly suitable for tulip bulb multiplication. He adds that the dedication of farmers and the scientific model developed by the institute have together created strong potential for making the region a recognised centre for quality bulb production.
Experts says that the initiative is not only promoting scientific floriculture in the Himalayan region but is also creating an additional source of livelihood for farmers. Tulip bulb cultivation offers higher returns compared to many traditional crops and can significantly enhance farm income.
