Ten shops gutted in Baddi market fire; short circuit suspected

Four fire tenders were used to douse the blaze that engulfed a large quantity of fabrics, including saris and silk, stored in the shops.

“A crew of 12 firemen along with four fire tenders was dispatched to the spot to extinguish the blaze after receiving information at 11.26 pm last night,” said Santosh Sharma, Commandant, Home Guards, Solan.

Owing to the inflammable nature of the wares housed in the shops, the fire spread quickly and was brought under control after three hours of intense firefighting.

More than 20 shops located in the vicinity were saved by timely firefighting, averting a major loss.

As per initial estimates, a short circuit is suspected to be the cause behind the blaze, though the actual cause will be ascertained after a detailed probe.

A police team also reached the spot to take stock of the situation. SP Baddi Vinod Dhiman was unavailable for comment.

The affected traders, who suffered losses running into lakhs, have demanded compensation from the administration and appealed for appropriate assistance.

This is the second fire incident in Baddi in recent days. Earlier in April, two cars parked in a parking lot at Basanti Bagh were gutted in a fire that emanated from a spark in a transformer. The cars were parked under the transformer.
