The initiative seeks to address a growing concern in modern society, where busy work schedules frequently prevent employed individuals from accompanying their ageing parents for medical consultations. As a result, many elderly people delay seeking treatment, leading to late diagnosis and management of health conditions.

Speaking at the launch, Dr Atul Gupta, IMA Dharamsala president, and paediatric endocrinologist, said the programme was inspired by the Indian ethos of respecting and caring for parents. Quoting the ancient Sanskrit teaching, “Matru Devo Bhava, Pitru Devo Bhava,” he emphasised that society must ensure dignity, care and quality healthcare for elderly citizens.

“Parents devote their lives to nurturing and supporting their children. As they grow older, it becomes our responsibility to ensure that they receive timely healthcare and compassionate support. Through this initiative, we aim to provide a patient-friendly environment where senior citizens can access medical advice without the stress of overcrowded healthcare facilities,” he said.

The Sunday OPD will offer consultations for common age-related health concerns, including diabetes, hypertension, thyroid disorders, heart disease, arthritis, osteoporosis, respiratory illnesses and nutritional deficiencies. Doctors will also provide guidance on preventive healthcare, healthy ageing, vaccination, medication adherence and lifestyle modifications.

Dr Gupta noted that India’s elderly population was growing rapidly, making geriatric healthcare an important public health priority.

Regular health monitoring and timely intervention can significantly improve quality of life and prevent complications arising from chronic diseases.

He said the initiative reflects its commitment to community service and social responsibility. The programme is being run through the voluntary efforts of doctors who have pledged to devote part of their holidays to serving elderly patients.

The association has appealed to families to make preventive healthcare a priority and ensure that ageing parents receive the care, respect and dignity they deserve.
