Storm wreaks havoc in Himachal: Roofs blown off houses, schools in Kullu

At least five residential houses and nearly 10 cow shelters had their roofs blown away during the storm. The worst-affected areas were in Banjar subdivision, particularly villages under Mashiyar panchayat, including Ghalincha, Ghaliad, Kameda and Kandi.

Residents said the storm struck suddenly with intense winds and heavy rain. “The wind and rain came all of a sudden. We rushed out of our homes as roofs started flying away,” said a villager.

The storm also caused significant damage in the Kaisdhar area of Kullu. In the Lug valley, the roof of a school building was blown off, causing considerable damage to the premises.

Even the historic Bijli Mahadev Temple was affected, with the roof of its sarai blown away and a water tank damaged.

Strong winds uprooted several trees and snapped branches, many of which fell on roads and parked vehicles, damaging multiple cars and two-wheelers. The NH-305 was also blocked temporarily after a tree was uprooted and fell across the highway.

Power supply remained erratic across Kullu town throughout the day, adding to the hardships faced by residents.

Meanwhile, residents of the Inner Akhara Bazaar area of Kullu town spent another sleepless night as rain and thunderstorms raised fears of fresh landslides from the vulnerable slopes of Math.

In a separate incident, the roof of the kitchen at Government Primary School, Shogi, was blown away during the storm. The debris was scattered nearly 50 metres away into nearby fields.

The school had already suffered extensive damage during the July-August 2025 disaster. Chet Ram, president of the School Management Committee, said no relief had yet been provided for the earlier damage. “We have not received any assistance for the losses suffered last year and now another storm has added to our troubles,” he said.

Local residents demanded immediate relief and compensation from the administration. Officials said damage assessment was underway and relief operations had been initiated in the affected areas. No loss of life was reported, though authorities advised residents to remain cautious as inclement weather conditions persist in the region.
