Key departments—including the medicine store, the Chief Pharmacy Officer, and the Block Health Supervisor — continue to operate from the far-off Gangath Civil Hospital. Local residents have spent years demanding that these essential medical and vaccine stores be consolidated in Nurpur.
While the Health Department recently established a new vaccine store-cum-cold chain point at the Nurpur Primary Health Centre (PHC), it simultaneously allowed the Gangath facility to keep running. Consequently, the block’s medical administration remains deeply fractured.
The Nurpur medical block is vast, overseeing nine PHCs, 26 health sub-centres, the Gangath Civil Hospital, and the Kherian Community Health Centre (CHC). Currently, only basic administrative duties are handled at the new Kamnala village office.
Nurpur BMO Dilwar Singh confirmed that while the infrastructure for the new vaccine store at the Nurpur PHC was complete, the main medicine store remains stuck at Gangath.
Compounding the issue is a history of infrastructural neglect by successive state governments. Ironically, the Kamnala building now housing the BMO office was originally built on land donated by a local resident for the Jassur PHC. Because the BMO office took over that space, the Jassur PHC is forced to operate out of a rented Panchayat Samiti building.
Local hopes now rest on a state government proposal approved last year for the Assembly constituency-wise rationalisation of the health blocks, which residents hope will finally bring all remaining staff and stores under one roof.
