Smart meter rollout begins in Mandi district, consumers urged to cooperate

The power board authorities have stated that consumers are expected to cooperate fully during the installation of smart meters. If any consumer causes obstruction or did not cooperate, the board may take action under the provisions of Section 163(3) of the Electricity Act, 2003, including issuance of notices under Section 163(3), which could lead to temporary disconnection of power supply.

Assistant Engineer, HPSEB, Hoshiyar Singh Rana said that under Section 163(1) of the Electricity Act, 2003, the authorised officials had the legal right to enter any premises for inspection, testing, repair, alteration or replacement of electricity meters and associated equipment.

He emphasised that electricity meters and service lines installed on the consumers’premises were the property of the electricity board.

Rana said that the consumers in the affected areas had been advised to update their mobile phone numbers with their consumer IDs at the electricity office. Failure to do so may result in difficulties in receiving timely electricity bill information and updates, he added.

Meanwhile, the power board has urged residents to extend their cooperation to ensuring a smooth and timely installation of smart meters.
