The team, comprising eight to 10 officials, will inspect cleanliness across the town over the next three to four days, after which it will prepare its report.
The officials will conduct surprise visits to all 34 wards of the town, where they will assess door-to-door garbage collection, sewerage systems, waste segregation and garbage disposal mechanisms.
Along with this, the team is also collecting feedback from residents regarding the cleanliness system in the town.
The evaluation will be used for the annual Swachh Survekshan rankings, which assess the cleanest cities in the country as well as in the state.
Shimla Municipal Corporation Mayor Surender Chauhan said the corporation is fully cooperating with the team during the assessment process.
He said extensive cleanliness and awareness campaigns had been conducted to improve Shimla’s ranking.
“The corporation is hopeful that Shimla will secure a much better position in the Swachh Survekshan rankings, which will be released later this year,” the Mayor said.
“The team is also expected to visit the solid waste management plant at Bharyal village,” he added.
Launched in 2016, Swachh Survekshan is an annual survey conducted by the Quality Council of India to assess cleanliness, hygiene and sanitation standards across the country.
Last year, Shimla witnessed a sharp decline in the rankings, slipping to the 347th position among the cleanest cities in the country. In 2024, the city had ranked 188th. Shimla was also ranked third among the cleanest cities in Himachal Pradesh in 2025.
