Shimla MC to reduce annual garbage collection bill hike from 10 per cent to 5 per cent from next FY

The decision was taken during the monthly general house meeting of the civic body, held under the chairmanship of Surinder Chauhan, Mayor, SMC here on Wednesday.

During the meeting, Congress councillor from Nabha ward, Simi Nanda had presented a proposal seeking a seven per cent reduction in the garbage collection bills.

The Councillor said an annual 10 percent hike in garbage collection bills is very high and places undue financial burden on the people, therefore it should immediately be reduced to three per cent to provide relief to the people.

However, the Mayor said it was not possible to reduce the garbage collection rates for this year as bills have already been issued, but he agreed that the garbage collection rates will be decreased from next year, ensuring that people do not have to bear additional financial burden.

Mayor also said the decision to hike the garbage collection rate by 10 per cent every year was taken back in 2018. He said the reason for such a step was that the annual income of Shimla Environment, Heritage Conservation and Beautification (SEHB) Society is less than its total income, amounting to losses.

The Mayor said to control the losses it was decided to implement an annual hike of 10 per cent in garbage collection bills.

It was also decided in the meeting that parking spaces which have already been allotted to local residents will now be granted on a long term basis, i.e. for five years instead of annual renewal.

The decision has been taken due to the fact that people have been facing inconveniences due to the yearly renewal process for which they have to visit Corporation’s offices multiple times.
