A native of Dharlahaddu village in Khundian Tehsil, Jawalaji, Rana was serving in the Indian Navy and was widely respected for his exemplary courage and dedication. He is survived by his wife and a three-year-old son.

The tragedy has dealt a devastating blow to his father, Keval Singh, a veteran of the 10 JAK Rifles, who lost his only son. Speaking to The Tribune, the grief-stricken yet composed father shared that Amit was trying to avoid hitting an animal that had suddenly darted onto the road. He lost control of the vehicle, which skidded and plunged nearly 100 feet into a deep gorge, resulting in fatal injuries.

Ram Nath Kovind, the then President of India conferring Shaurya Chakra on Amit Rana.

Amit Rana was cremated with full military honours at his native village on Tuesday afternoon. Hundreds of mourners — including serving and retired defence personnel, local residents, and officials —gathered to pay their last respects to the fallen warrior.

Renowned for his fearlessness, Rana’s gallantry in anti-terror operations had earned him the Shaurya Chakra, one of India’s highest peacetime gallantry awards. His passing is an irreparable loss to both his family and the nation.

His citation reads: “Deployed in Jammu and Kashmir under Operation Rakshak, MARCOS Commando Amit Singh Rana displayed extraordinary courage and devotion to duty during Operations Danna and Shok Baba, which resulted in the elimination of eight foreign terrorists. In Operation Danna, he fearlessly provided close cover to his officer and neutralised a terrorist at point-blank range. Days later, during Operation Shok Baba, Rana volunteered for an exceptionally dangerous mission to place an IED near a fortified cowshed sheltering heavily armed terrorists.

Despite coming under intense enemy fire, he successfully completed the task, leading to the destruction of the hideout and the elimination of three terrorists. Commended by the Indian Army, his gallantry and selfless actions earned him the prestigious Shaurya Chakra.”
