Residents said the siblings developed mental health issues after suffering severe emotional trauma and social hardships when they were young. Since then, both reportedly wandered aimlessly and survived in inhumane conditions inside their dilapidated ancestral home.

The house was barely habitable. The roof was broken and leaked when it rained, while the room where the siblings stayed was filled with filth and a foul smell. Wooden planks served as their bed, and a torn blanket was their only protection from the weather. Villagers said the two survived mostly on food occasionally provided by neighbours and otherwise went hungry for days. Nisha would often leave the house and remain missing for several days before returning.

The situation came to light after someone informed SDM Shillai, Jaspal Singh, about the siblings’ condition. Moved by the report, the officer personally visited the house. Sources said the scene left him visibly emotional. One sibling was seen eating a piece of bread from a wooden tray while the other lay silently under a torn blanket as sunlight streamed through the damaged roof.

Seeing the unbearable conditions, the SDM immediately arranged food and basic necessities for the siblings and discussed their treatment and rehabilitation with villagers. The administration first explored medical assistance in Shimla. Later, it contacted Paonta Sahib-based social worker Sanjay Kanwar, who has long helped helpless and mentally ill individuals.

Through coordinated efforts, both siblings were admitted to a hospital for treatment and care. Locals and officials expressed hope that proper medical attention and emotional support would help them recover and reintegrate into society with dignity.

Residents praised SDM Jaspal for his humane approach and prompt intervention. Known for his social service initiatives even before joining the administrative service, he has reportedly helped several needy and abandoned individuals in the past.

The incident highlights the harsh realities faced by mentally ill and abandoned individuals in remote rural areas, and the importance of timely intervention and compassionate governance.
