As per the police, the scammers are contacting people via text messages and calls, claiming to be a gas agency worker. Then, they create panic by spreading false information, claiming there is an acute shortage of LGP due to the ongoing conflicts in West Asia and create urgency into making the victim book their cylinders in advance. In case any person refuses or hesitates, the scammers then warn the victim of providing the available supply to someone else, creating panic amongst the people.
The scammers send a link, which they claim is for advanced booking of cylinders, however, once opened, they use it to steal sensitive information of the victim such as personal information, passwords, banking details, contact lists, etc.
Stressing that gas agencies never book LPG cylinders on call or via any link, people have been advised to avoid any such calls and messages and only book cylinders from authorised agencies. People have also been advised not to click on any unknown or suspicious links as well as to never share OTPs and bank details with anyone.
The police further advised people to immediately report any instance of cybercrime within the first three hours of the scam, stating that it increases chances of recovery of lost money as well as the arrest of the accused.
Cybercrime over the years has emerged as a major problem in the state as the total number of incidents witnessed a significant surge. In 2025, as many as 18,706 cybercrime complaints were received from across the state, highlighting a sharp rise in such incidents in 2025 as compared to 12,249 in 2024 and 8,077 in 2023.
