PC Vishwakarma, president of the samiti, in a petition submitted to the Chief Justice of the HC recently, stated that the vital rail services were halted in August 2022 after an old interstate railway bridge on the Chakki rivulet at Kandwal in Nurpur washed away. He added that a new bridge over the Chakki had been constructed. Besides, technical experts of the Northern Railway had inspected the new bridge and the railway track in January this year, yet the services remain suspended.
The petition highlighted that the Northern Railway had briefly released a timetable for trains scheduled to resume services from March 10 but it was withdrawn within hours without any explanation. All seven up-and-down trains continue to remain suspended, causing widespread resentment among commuters and residents of Kangra district.
The samiti stated that the train services had long served as an affordable and essential mode of transport for thousands of residents, traders and tourists. It urged the HC to issue strict directions to the Railway authorities for the immediate restoration of services. Earlier, the samiti had submitted memorandums addressed to PM Modi and Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. Protests had been held at various locations, including at the Ranital and Koparlahar railway stations and Dharamsala, last month for the restoration of service.
Rajesh Nandpuri, convener of the samiti, said that a civil writ petition would also be filed in the High Court next week. A meeting was being convened at Ranital near Kangra before filing the petition. Kangra MP Rajiv Bhardwaj had raised the issue in Parliament while Rajya Sabha MP Harsh Mahajan had written to the Railway Minister but the matter remained unresolved.
