Road caves in due to excavation work, traffic on Chamba-Bharmour stretch disrupted

Vehicle movement remained completely suspended for nearly three hours following the cave-in, leading to long queues on both sides of the highway. Several buses and private vehicles were stranded, causing inconvenience to passengers. Many commuters crossed the damaged road stretch on foot and arranged alternative transport from the other side, often at a high cost.

The authorities later deployed machinery and carved out a temporary route by cutting through the hillside, restoring limited traffic movement. Officials said that only light vehicles can pass safely, while heavy vehicles continue to face difficulties.

The affected area remains vulnerable due to loose soil and ongoing rainfall, raising the risk of further subsidence or landslides. The officials warned that continued rain could worsen the situation and pose a serious threat to the highway.

Executive Engineer Joginder Sharma said that traffic had been restored on a temporary basis and urged motorists to exercise caution while crossing the damaged stretch.
