The conference aims to promote interdisciplinary dialogue on Indian knowledge systems and their relevance in building sustainable and value-oriented futures.
The inaugural session was attended by Mahavir Singh, Vice-Chancellor of Himachal Pradesh University, as the chief guest. Narender Kumar Sankhyan, Registrar of Central University of Himachal Pradesh, and Soumya Sambasivan attended as guests of honour.
Conference convener Dr Mayank Rana outlined the objectives and thematic dimensions of the event, highlighting its focus on sustainability, culture, education and indigenous knowledge traditions.
In his inaugural address, Prof Mahavir highlighted the role of Indian knowledge systems in promoting sustainable development and holistic human values. He also stressed the growing relevance of emerging fields such as quantum science, artificial intelligence and data science, and the need to integrate these with traditional Indian wisdom traditions.
He said the convergence of modern technologies with India’s knowledge heritage could encourage innovation, ethical advancement and sustainable progress in society.
Principal Dr Pankaj Sood said the conference would provide an important academic platform for deliberations on India’s intellectual and cultural heritage. He emphasised the need to integrate contemporary knowledge systems with ancient Indian wisdom traditions under the broader framework of the IKS.
Dr Sankhyan highlighted the importance of multidisciplinary engagement with Indian knowledge traditions and their increasing relevance in higher education and research ecosystems.
Addressing the gathering, Soumya underlined the enduring relevance of Indian ethical and cultural values in strengthening society and governance. Referring to the philosophical essence of Bharat Darshan, she said Indian knowledge systems reflected a holistic vision rooted in harmony, duty, inclusivity and collective well-being.
The keynote address was delivered by Kaushal Kumar Sharma, former professor at the Centre for the Study of Regional Development and former Dean of the School of Social Sciences at Jawaharlal Nehru University. He elaborated on the core principles and contemporary relevance of Indian knowledge systems.
The conference will feature 20 technical sessions over two days in hybrid mode, with scholars presenting research papers on sustainability, culture, education, indigenous traditions and traditional knowledge practices.
