Known locally as Miss Pillai, the woman lives in Naggar in Kullu district. Her eight-month-old dog, Safi, went missing on March 2, setting off a relentless search that has stretched over seven weeks. What began as a neighbourhood hunt soon expanded far beyond, reaching as far as Punjab, over 300 km away.
Since then, Pillai has been on the move almost constantly, hiring cabs and travelling from one place to another in the hope of finding a clue. She has lodged police complaints in multiple locations, put up posters wherever possible and even announced a cash reward. Initially set at Rs 15,000, the reward has now been doubled to Rs 30,000 to increase the chances of someone coming forward with information.
“I’ve been doing everything I can think of,” she said while continuing her search from Sundernagar. Her journey has taken her to places like Kapurthala, which she visited twice, and Jalandhar, as she followed every possible lead linked to Safi’s disappearance.
However, the search has not been without its distressing moments. In Mandi, a few children told her about dogs frequently going missing in the area and spoke of a suspected individual harming them. Alarmed, Pillai approached the man’s house accompanied by police personnel. Though Safi was not found there, she said the condition of the dogs present left her shaken.
After initially focusing on areas towards Punjab, Pillai is now concentrating her efforts in Mandi and nearby regions. “I have a strong feeling he is somewhere around here,” she said, clinging to hope despite the lack of concrete leads.
Seven weeks on, her search remains as uncertain as it was on the first day. Yet, giving up is not an option. Asked how long she would continue, her answer was unwavering: “Until I find him.”
