“We will continue to work wearing black ribbons to protest the bifurcation of the obstetrics and gynaecology department and the shifting of the OPD to IGMC,” said Manoj Sharma, an employee leader at Kamla Nehru Hospital, while demanding that the order be withdrawn.
The state government has justified the move on the grounds that patients would benefit from improved facilities at IGMC. Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu had recently said advanced equipment, including robotic surgery, available at IGMC would enhance patient care.
However, the decision has failed to convince the medical fraternity, which has stepped up its opposition.
Doctors argued that obstetrics and gynaecology function best as a unified department. “When both are housed under one roof, efficiency and patient care improve significantly. It benefits patients, doctors, students and staff alike,” a doctor said.
Meanwhile, the All India Democratic Women Association has announced a protest outside IGMC on Thursday, demanding that the government roll back the decision.
They added that patients requiring robotic surgery could be referred to IGMC, instead of shifting the entire OPD. Urging the CM to reconsider the decision, doctors said Kamla Nehru Hospital has been delivering quality services for years and should instead be strengthened with additional facilities such as an IVF centre.
Nursing staff also raised concerns over diagnostic delays. They pointed out that Kamla Nehru Hospital’s diagnostic services are dedicated to obstetrics and gynaecology patients, ensuring timely reports, whereas IGMC already handles a heavy patient load.
“It remains to be seen how many patients will opt for robotic surgery, as it is expensive, while routine procedures are largely free,” a nurse said.
