Probe begins into felling of deodar trees

Pangi Divisional Forest Officer Ravi Guleria said that the Range Officer, Purthi, had been appointed the inquiry officer and directed to submit a report within 15 days. The field staff, including the Range Forest Officer of the area, Forest Guard, Van Mitra and workers, had been issued show-cause notices.

Back-to-back incidents of illegal felling of trees had made local residents concerned. Earlier, the forest mafia had illegally felled seven or eight green deodar trees in Chauri forest of the Sach range this month. A probe is underway in that case as well.

Pangi in Chamba district is one of the most remote valleys of Himachal, nestled along the Chenab river and surrounded by high mountain ranges. Its inaccessibility poses persistent challenges for forest monitoring and governance. Locals said that if forest authorities continued to fail to check such incidents, it would lead to large-scale damage in the ecologically-fragile valley.
