Officials at the estate recall that during her first visit in 2023, the President had emphasised the need to develop the orchards with a wider selection of fruit crops. Acting on her direction, efforts have since been underway to introduce improved varieties and modern cultivation practices.
To establish a high-density apple orchard, the administration collaborated with progressive grower Dimple Panjta from Rohru about three years ago. He introduced a mix of Delicious and Gala apple varieties using advanced planting techniques and the orchard has already begun yielding produce.
Last year saw a promising harvest, with select boxes even dispatched to Rashtrapati Bhavan in Delhi. However, officials remain cautious about this season’s output due to erratic weather conditions. Building on the success of apples, cherries and multiple berry varieties have also been planted, again with Panjta’s guidance. Around 200 saplings of blackberry, blueberry and raspberry have taken root, with some already showing early flowering signs. Looking ahead, the orchard may see further diversification.
