The matter came to light after a video went viral on social media platforms, in which a person and a parking operator were seen arguing after the said person was charged Rs 800 for parking his motorcycle for an hour at a parking lot near the lift.
The video drew flak from the people who questioned the corporation for such arbitrary fees being charged by parking lot operators.
The person who was allegedly overcharged for parking his motorcycle said when he questioned the parking operators over the fixed parking fee, they started to misbehave with him and also threatened him with physical assault.
He also accused the parking operators of being aggressive towards the people while charging arbitrary fees. The corporation took action into the matter as soon as it came to know about the incident.
Bhupinder Attri, Municipal Commissioner, SMC, said the matter has come to their notice and stern action will be taken against the person involved in this incident. He said such incidents are frequently reported during the peak tourist season on which action is taken as per the law.
“Rates of all the commercial parking within the state’s capital are fixed, therefore no one can charge more than the prescribed amount. In case of violation, a stern action is taken against the offender, and such operators will be panelised” he said.
