Nutri-gardens, training modules to boost food schemes in state

The decision was taken during a meeting on convergence and capacity-building initiatives held on Wednesday under the chairmanship of Dr S P Katyal.

The meeting focused on finalising structured training and capacity-building programmes for Mid-Day Meal workers, Anganwadi workers and school staff across the state. Discussions also centred on nutritious recipes, scientific menu planning and strict adherence to hygiene and food safety standards.

Participants identified the establishment and promotion of nutri-gardens through Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) as a key strategy to improve access to fresh and nutritious produce at the grassroots level.

It was also decided that nodal officers from the Department of Women and Child Development and the Department of School Education would be designated to ensure effective coordination with CSK-HPKV, Palampur.

“This institutional mechanism will enable all stakeholders to work in close synergy, recognising that their objectives of improving nutrition outcomes are aligned,” Dr Katyal said.

During the meeting, CSK-HPKV expressed willingness to provide technical support for developing comprehensive training modules for the School Education and Women and Child Development Departments.

Dr Vinod Sharma, Director of Extension Education at CSK-HPKV, said the proposed modules would focus on improving kitchen practices, strengthening nutri-garden initiatives and supporting other nutrition-related interventions.

He added that the university would also conduct master training programmes for selected personnel, who would subsequently train field-level workers to ensure effective implementation at the grassroots.

Detailed discussions were also held on designing need-based training modules, preparing standardised menus using locally available nutritious food items and ensuring strict compliance with food safety regulations. Participants emphasised the role of academic and extension institutions in providing continuous technical guidance and field-level support for nutrition initiatives in the state.
