Menstrual Hygiene Day is observed annually on May 28 across the world to promote menstrual health, dignity and gender equality. However, the programme was delayed due to PRI elections in the state.
The day seeks to break the stigma surrounding menstruation and improve access to menstrual products, education and sanitation facilities for women and girls.
The workshop brought together students and faculty members from Dronacharya Nursing Institute, Yol; Netaji Subhash Chandra Nursing Institute, Palampur; Maa Jwala Nursing Institute, Jwalamukhi; Maple Leaf Nursing Institute, Kangra; and Satyam Nursing Institute, Rait.
Addressing the participants, District Health Officer Dr RK Sood highlighted this year’s theme, “Together for a #PeriodFriendlyWorld.” He said menstrual health is an important public health and social issue that affects the well-being, confidence and education of women and adolescent girls. He urged nursing students to become ambassadors of change and spread awareness in communities and villages through their outreach activities.
District Programme Officer Dr Anuradha spoke about the importance of safe menstrual hygiene practices and access to clean water, sanitation facilities and menstrual products. She also discussed the proper use of different menstrual hygiene products and stressed the need to challenge myths and taboos through open discussion and community engagement.
The workshop included sessions on menstrual hygiene management, adolescent health, nutrition and anaemia, and the role of nurses in promoting awareness. Special emphasis was laid on creating supportive and dignified environments for women and girls.
To encourage youth participation, speech, poster-making, face-painting and skit competitions were organised. Students conveyed messages on menstrual health through creative presentations. A face-painting display by students of Netaji Subhash Chandra Nursing Institute, Palampur, and a skit by Dronacharya Nursing Institute, Yol, were among the highlights of the programme.
Faculty members and students were honoured for their contribution towards promoting menstrual health awareness.
