MC polls: Himachal CM Sukhu promises relief to merged areas & Baghat Bank depositors

Addressing a public gathering in Solan on the concluding day of campaigning for the civic body polls, the Chief Minister touched upon several local and state issues, including the crisis surrounding the Baghat Urban Cooperative Bank, development works, financial assistance from the Centre and the implementation of welfare schemes.

Seeking to strike an emotional chord with local residents, Sukhu said his government would also examine the role of administrative officials responsible for the financial mess in the Baghat Urban Cooperative Bank so that poor depositors do not continue to suffer. Thousands of depositors have been unable to withdraw their hard-earned savings since October 2025 after the Reserve Bank of India imposed financial restrictions on the bank over alleged irregularities in loan disbursement.

The Chief Minister maintained that despite financial constraints, his government had continued developmental works in sectors such as education, healthcare and social security. He informed the gathering that Rs 1 crore had already been sanctioned for each of the 17 wards of Solan around two months ago.

Referring to water supply issues, Sukhu said the state Cabinet had decided to entrust water distribution to the Jal Shakti Department to ensure smoother and more efficient supply. Launching a sharp attack on the BJP, Sukhu accused its leaders of failing to protect the interests of Himachal Pradesh. He questioned why BJP leaders had not asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi about the non-release of the Rs 1,500 crore assistance allegedly announced after an aerial survey of monsoon-hit areas in 2025.

He urged voters to support the Congress, recalling that the party had won the Solan Municipal Corporation elections in 2021 despite the BJP being in power both in the state and at the Centre.

Attempting to consolidate employee support, the Chief Minister highlighted the restoration of the Old Pension Scheme for 1.36 lakh employees in the first Cabinet meeting of his government and said pension arrears of retirees above 70 years had also been cleared.

Sukhu also claimed that corruption in schemes such as Himcare had been curbed and asserted that Himachal Pradesh had made major gains in the education sector, rising from 21st position in 2021 to fifth position now.

Continuing his attack on the Opposition, the Chief Minister alleged that the BJP in Himachal Pradesh was divided into multiple factions, with leaders working against one another and internal groups attempting to unseat both Leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur and state BJP president Rajiv Bindal.
