Addressing a public gathering during the election campaign in Palampur, Thakur said the BJP was committed to ensuring planned and balanced development of the town. He claimed that electing Congress candidates to the Municipal Corporation would hamper developmental activities and affect coordination with future governments.
Stating that the tenure of the present Congress government in Himachal was nearing its end, Thakur remarked that there was “no use” in voting for Congress candidates in the civic polls as the state government had only around one-and-a-half years left in office. He asserted that the BJP would return to power in the next Assembly elections and appealed to the electorate to support BJP-backed candidates for faster execution of development projects in Palampur.
Thakur said the Palampur Municipal Corporation was established by the BJP government in 2021 during his tenure as CM. According to him, the civic body was created keeping in view the rapid expansion of the town and its growing urban requirements.
He said the BJP government had envisioned systematic urban planning, improved civic amenities and modern infrastructure for Palampur through the Municipal Corporation framework. Thakur added that several initiatives were launched during the BJP regime to strengthen roads, sanitation systems, water supply and other essential civic services in the town.
Targeting the ruling Congress government, the former Chief Minister alleged that it had failed to accelerate development works and had neglected urban infrastructure in many towns across the state. He said voters should support the BJP to ensure continuity in development projects and effective administration in the Municipal Corporation.
Thakur also asked BJP workers to intensify door-to-door campaigning and reach every household before polling day. Expressing confidence over the party’s prospects, he said the BJP would register a strong victory in the Municipal Corporation elections with public support.
Several senior BJP leaders, local office-bearers and party supporters attended the meeting. The civic polls in Palampur have witnessed intense campaigning by both the BJP and Congress, with local development and civic infrastructure emerging as key election issues.
Dharamsala: Former Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur on Sunday launched a sharp attack on the Congress government while addressing a massive BJP workers’ convention at Dari in Dharamsala as part of the Municipal Corporation election campaign.
Addressing party workers and supporters, Thakur alleged that the Congress government had deliberately stalled the development of Dharamsala after BJP leader Sudhir Sharma became MLA from the constituency. He claimed that the people of Dharamsala were fed up with the “anti-people policies, false promises and administrative failures” of the present state government.
He appealed to voters to support BJP candidates in all 17 wards, stating that a BJP-led Municipal Corporation was essential for the city’s “real and modern development.” Thakur assured that there would be no shortage of funds for development projects and said the BJP would ensure special financial support from the Central Government for Dharamsala.
Criticising the Congress government, he said merely making announcements about turning Dharamsala into a tourism capital or smart city would not bring development on the ground. He alleged that the state government had failed to even prepare the DPR for Smart City projects and had also diverted funds earmarked during the BJP regime for a proposed international convention centre under the ADB project.
Several senior BJP leaders, including state in-charge Shrikant Sharma, MP Rajeev Bhardwaj, Vipin Parmar and Pawan Kajal and Dharamsala MLA Sudhir Sharma also addressed the gathering.
