The municipal corporation elections in Himachal Pradesh were contested on party symbols, turning the contest into a direct political showdown between the ruling Congress and the Opposition BJP. As a result, the Mandi MC polls have assumed significance far beyond local civic issues, emerging as a test of political influence and organisational strength for both parties.
The stakes are particularly high for former Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur, whose home district is Mandi. In the previous elections, held in 2021 when he was Chief Minister, the BJP secured 11 of the 15 wards, establishing a strong foothold in the municipal body. This time, however, the party entered the contest from the Opposition benches, while the Congress enjoys power in the state.
Recognising the significance of the election, Jai Ram Thakur personally led the BJP campaign and extensively toured almost every ward of the municipal corporation. The party’s performance is being viewed as a direct reflection of his political standing and influence in his home turf.
Former minister and BJP MLA Anil Sharma also has much at stake. With his family enjoying a long-standing political presence in Mandi Sadar, the election results will be seen as a measure of the BJP’s continued influence in the constituency and Sharma’s ability to mobilise support for the party.
On the other hand, the ruling Congress has made determined efforts to challenge the BJP’s dominance in Mandi. Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu campaigned for party candidates, while Public Works and Urban Development Minister Vikramaditya Singh spent several days in Mandi conducting an intensive campaign across wards to strengthen the party’s prospects.
Political observers believe the results will have implications beyond municipal governance. Following the 2021 MC elections, Jai Ram Thakur’s leadership played a crucial role in the BJP winning nine of the district’s 10 Assembly seats. Consequently, the outcome of the current municipal elections is being viewed as another important test of his political leadership and grassroots connect in Mandi.
With both the BJP and Congress investing considerable political capital in the contest, all eyes are now on the Mandi MC results. The verdict will not only determine control of the municipal corporation but could also reshape the political narrative in Mandi district ahead of future electoral battles.
