The nomination process concluded in Mandi on Saturday with a surge in participation, as 43 candidates filed their papers on the third and final day across 15 wards of the civic body.
According to SDM Sadar Rupinder Kaur, who is serving as Assistant Returning Officer for wards 1 to 13, Ward No 1, Khaliyar, reserved for the general category, witnessed the highest activity, with five candidates — Alaknanda Handa, Rajeev Vaidya, Praveen Kumar, Vivek and Gaurav — filing their nominations.
In Ward No 2, Purani Mandi, reserved for women, Sarita Handa filed her nomination, while in Ward No 3, Paddal, also reserved for women, Neelam Sharma submitted two sets of nomination papers. In Ward No 4, Nela, reserved for women, Santosh filed one nomination, while Narvada Devi submitted two sets.
In Ward No 5, Mangwain, reserved for women, Rajni Chandra and Krishna Thakur entered the fray. In Ward No 6, Sanyard, reserved for Scheduled Castes, Virender Singh Arya and Vinod Kumar filed their nominations.
Ward No 7, Talyahar, a general ward, emerged as another key contesting seat, with six candidates — Akash Sharma, Abhinav, Yadavinder, Rupesh Kumar, Jainender Kumar and Sudesh — filing their papers.
In Ward No 8, Palace Colony-1, reserved for women, Neem Dasi filed her nomination. Ward No 9, Palace Colony-2, a general ward, saw Vinay Sharma filing one set of papers, while Suman submitted two sets. In Ward No 10, Suhra, reserved for Scheduled Caste women, Sushma Kumari and Neha filed nominations.
Ward No 11, Samkhetar, a general ward, recorded nominations from Nikhil Walia, Gaurav Sharma, Varun and Divya Handa. In Ward No 12, Bhagwahan, also a general ward, Chander Shekhar, Yogesh and Tejinder Singh filed nominations, while Dinesh Kumar submitted two sets.
Ward No 13, Thanehra, reserved for women, saw Geetanjali filing her nomination, while Rajni Sharma submitted two sets.
For the remaining wards, SDM Balh and Assistant Returning Officer for wards 14 and 15 Samritika Negi said Ward No 14, Behna, reserved for Scheduled Castes, received nominations from Dhan Dev and Krishan Bhanu, while Ward No 15, Dhaunhdi, reserved for Scheduled Caste women, saw Anjaya Kumari and Meena Devi filing their papers.
Officials said only one nomination was filed on the first day, followed by 15 on the second day, before the number rose sharply to 43 on the final day. With several wards witnessing multi-cornered contests, the civic elections are expected to be keenly fought.
