Mandi MC elections set to witness keen BJP-Congress contest

In the previous MC election, the BJP delivered an impressive performance, securing 11 out of 15 seats, leaving the Congress with just four. The election was fought on party symbols, raising the political stakes significantly. At that time, the BJP held power in Himachal Pradesh under the leadership of Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur, who hails from Mandi district.

His personal connect with the region, coupled with an aggressive campaign led by senior BJP leaders, played a crucial role in the party’s sweeping victory.

The BJP’s campaign then focused on development promises, governance record and leveraging the influence of the sitting Chief Minister from Mandi. The victory was seen not only as a local triumph but also as a reflection of the party’s organisational strength in the region.

However, the political landscape has since changed. The Congress is now in power in Himachal Pradesh under the leadership of Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu and the party is expected to put its full weight behind the Mandi MC poll. With control of the state government, Congress leaders are likely to emphasise governance, local development issues and alleged shortcomings of the previous BJP-led municipal body to regain lost ground.

Political observers believe that the Congress sees this election as an opportunity to reassert its presence in Mandi, a district that carries symbolic and strategic importance. A victory here would strengthen the party’s grassroots network and send a broader political message ahead of future elections.

On the other hand, the BJP is expected to rely on its past performance in the MC, its cadre strength and the continued influence of leaders like Jai Ram Thakur to retain control. The party is likely to highlight developmental works undertaken during its tenure and mobilise voters around continuity and stability.

As both parties prepare for a high-pitched campaign, the Mandi MC election is poised to become a significant political contest, reflecting not just local dynamics but also the shifting balance of power in Himachal Pradesh. Voters will ultimately decide whether to endorse continuity under the BJP or opt for change under the Congress.
