Kullu court awards 20-yr jail term in POCSO case

The judgment was delivered by Prakash Chand Rana, who found Thakur Das, son of Dola Ram and a resident of Kullu district, guilty under Section 376(3) of the Indian Penal Code and Section 4 of the POCSO Act.

The court sentenced the convict to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 50,000. In default of payment of the fine, he will have to undergo an additional two years of simple imprisonment.

According to the prosecution, the case came to light after the victim’s father lodged a complaint with the police on October 12, 2022. He alleged that a day earlier, while the child’s parents were working in the fields, the accused lured the minor and later committed the offence.

Following the complaint, a case was registered at Sainj police station and an investigation was launched.

During the probe, police collected scientific evidence and forensic samples, which were sent for laboratory examination. The prosecution stated that the DNA analysis played a crucial role in establishing the offence and strengthening the case.

After completion of the investigation, the police filed a chargesheet before the court. During the trial, the prosecution examined 15 witnesses and produced scientific and documentary evidence in support of its case.

After evaluating the evidence and witness testimonies, the court held the accused guilty and awarded the sentence.

The District Attorney said the judgment underscored the importance of scientific evidence in securing convictions and sent a strong message that crimes against children would be dealt with strictly under the law.
