Kullu District Magistrate Anurag Chander Sharma has issued fresh orders allowing tourist vehicles to move up to the third curve beyond Rahni Nala at km 46.35 on the 50-km Manali-Rohtang route.
The revised orders were issued after a joint inspection conducted by the Manali Sub-Divisional Magistrate along with officials of the police department and the Border Roads Organisation (BRO). Authorities found the stretch safe for vehicular movement and accordingly shifted the temporary police barrier from Gulaba to the new designated point. The road was opened for traffic till Marhi on May 4.
Last year, the Rohtang road was opened beyond Rahni Nala in mid-May, while the Rohtang Pass was officially reopened for tourist traffic on May 24, 2025.
The reopening of the route has led to a sharp rise in tourist arrivals in Manali. Snow-covered mountains, pleasant weather and towering walls of snow along the road have become a major attraction for visitors from across the country.
Long queues of vehicles, crowded viewpoints and bustling tourism activity have brought life back to the region after months.
BRO has been working relentlessly, from both the Manali and Koksar sides, cutting through snow walls ranging from five to twenty feet in height.
Officials stated that only a few km of snow clearance work remains before the entire pass is restored for traffic movement. Rohtang Pass, situated at an altitude of 13,058 feet, remains one of Himachal’s biggest tourist attractions.
The revival of the tourist movement has brought relief to hotel owners, taxi operators, restaurant businesses and local traders in Manali. However, the sudden rush has also triggered massive traffic congestion on the narrow mountain roads. Tourists and residents have reported long traffic snarls at several locations between Manali and Rahni Nala.
Local stakeholders have urged the administration to improve traffic management during the peak tourist season. Members of the ATV Association suggested implementing a one-way traffic system once the road is fully restored to reduce congestion.
Meanwhile, the administration clarified that vehicle movement on the Rohtang route would continue to remain regulated under National Green Tribunal (NGT) norms, including the cap on daily vehicle permits and mandatory online permissions.
