Key Facts

The Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Limited (KPTCL) has initiated a pilot project to implement Dynamic Line Rating (DLR) technology on the 220 kV Puttenahalli–Sahakarnagar transmission corridor in Bengaluru. This advanced system can increase transmission capacity by up to 25% without requiring new infrastructure or land acquisition.

Details of the Initiative

V. Ram Prasath Manohar, Managing Director of KPTCL, confirmed that the Letter of Intent for the project has been issued, positioning KPTCL among the first state transmission utilities in South India to adopt DLR. The technology replaces conventional Static Line Rating with real-time monitoring using IoT-enabled sensors that track ambient temperature, wind speed, solar radiation, and conductor sag. This allows grid operators to dynamically optimize line capacity based on actual weather conditions.

Impact and Future Plans

The pilot corridor will validate operational benefits. Based on results, KPTCL plans to extend DLR to other high-load transmission corridors and renewable energy evacuation networks across Karnataka. Energy Minister K.J. George highlighted that Karnataka continues to lead in power sector innovation, and this project will help meet growing demand without major capital investments, building a future-ready grid.

What Readers Should Know

  • DLR unlocks additional capacity from existing transmission lines.
  • No new towers or land are needed, reducing costs and environmental impact.
  • The pilot is on a 220 kV line in Bengaluru.
  • IoT sensors provide real-time data for dynamic rating.

FAQ

What is Dynamic Line Rating (DLR) technology?

DLR is an IoT-based system that monitors real-time weather and conductor conditions to dynamically adjust transmission line capacity, replacing static ratings.

How much capacity increase does DLR provide?

DLR can enhance transmission capacity by up to 25% without building new towers or acquiring land.

Which transmission line is selected for the pilot?

The 220 kV Puttenahalli–Sahakarnagar corridor in Bengaluru is the pilot site.
