Kangra sees flood of nominations as Panchayati Raj poll battle intensifies

Election officials said 5,989 nominations were submitted on the second day on Friday, after 6,559 candidates entered the fray on the opening day on May 7. The overwhelming response has set the stage for a keen battle for key rural posts, including pradhan, up-pradhan, ward member, panchayat samiti and Zila Parishad seats. The last date for filing nominations is May 11.

Officials said the highest number of nominations for the post of pradhan came from the Rait development block, where 209 candidates filed papers. Fatehpur followed with 179 nominations, while Pragpur and Nurpur recorded 178 and 165 nominations, respectively.

For the post of up-pradhan, Pragpur emerged as the most competitive block with 209 nominations, closely followed by Fatehpur with 201. Surani and Lambagaon also witnessed heavy participation, recording 184 and 177 nominations, respectively. The fiercest contest, however, is unfolding for ward member seats. Fatehpur topped the district with 546 nominations, while Pragpur recorded 521 nominations. Nagrota Surian saw 505 candidates entering the fray, while Indora reported 449 nominations.

The contest for higher rural bodies is also intensifying. A total of 988 nominations have been filed for panchayat samiti member posts, including 77 from Nagrota Surian, 76 from Fatehpur and 71 from Indora. For Zila Parishad seats, 126 nomination papers have been filed so far across the district.

Meanwhile, neighbouring Chamba district has also witnessed an overwhelming response to the Panchayati Raj polls, with 4,878 nomination papers filed in two days, reflecting heightened political activity in tribal and remote areas.

Deputy Commissioner and District Election Officer Mukesh Repswal said 2,581 nominations were received on the second day, while 2,297 candidates had filed papers on the opening day. Bhattiyat development block recorded the highest number of nominations in Chamba, with 983 candidates entering the fray, followed by Tissa with 942 nominations. Chamba block registered 731 nominations, while Salooni reported 672. Bharmour and Pangi recorded 435 and 256 nominations, respectively.

The heavy rush of nominations in both Kangra and Chamba points to an intense grassroots political contest ahead, with local equations, caste dynamics and development issues expected to dominate campaigning in the coming days.
