‘Illogical move’: State medical faculty body rejects shifting gynaecology OPD to IGMC Shimla

The association said that the OBG department functions as a unified entity worldwide, particularly in teaching institutions, where integrated patient care and academic training are essential. The association has urged the Chief Minister to reconsider and revoke the decision in the larger public interest.

SAMDCOT warned that separating gynaecology from obstetrics would adversely affect both patient outcomes and medical education. “Optimal patient care in OBG requires a unified department to ensure continuity and multidisciplinary coordination. Fragmentation will lead to inefficiencies, delays, and compromised treatment standards,” the association said.

It further raised concerns over the impact on teaching programmes, pointing out that the bifurcation would disrupt undergraduate and postgraduate training. It termed the proposal to create two teaching units of 60 students each as impractical and not in line with National Medical Commission (NMC) norms.

Responding to the government’s justification of introducing robotic surgery for gynaecology operations, SAMDCOT said the argument was not tenable. It pointed out that robotic surgery for gynaecology patients was required in a limited number of cases, and it was available for only three days a week at IGMC.

The association further said that KNH already had adequate infrastructure and planned expansions, including an IVF centre, a foetal medicine unit, and an oncology centre. “These projects, proposed by previous governments, could face indefinite delays due to the restructuring,” the association said.
