HRTC restarts Kullu-Kaza bus service after 8-month hiatus

The decision follows the successful restoration of the strategic road connecting Gramphu to Kaza via the Kunzum Pass by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO). After the route was reopened for vehicular traffic a few days ago, HRTC conducted a successful trial run on Saturday, clearing the way for the resumption of regular passenger services.

HRTC Regional Manager for Lahaul and Spiti, Anshit Sharma, said the trial run had been completed successfully and regular bus operations would commence from Sunday, providing improved transport facilities to residents of the remote Spiti valley.

The bus service was suspended on October 15 last year after heavy snowfall at the Kunzum Pass and adjoining areas rendered the route inaccessible during the winter season. Following the restoration of the road by the BRO, local residents had been demanding the early resumption of public transport services.

The restoration of the bus service is expected to significantly improve connectivity for residents of Spiti, who often face transportation challenges owing to the region’s difficult terrain and extreme weather conditions. The service will also provide an affordable travel option for tourists planning to visit the picturesque high-altitude desert of Spiti valley during the summer season.

Tourism stakeholders believe the resumption of regular bus operations will boost visitor numbers in the region, making destinations such as Kaza and nearby attractions more accessible and economical for travellers from across the country.

With the reopening of the Kullu–Kaza road and the restoration of public transport services, normal travel activities are gradually returning to the region, signalling the beginning of the peak tourist season in Spiti valley.
