The university has directed the Chairpersons and Directors of all departments to submit their research project proposals for preliminary scrutiny within a week. They have also been directed to submit the proposals to the Dean, Planning and Teachers’ Matters, Planning and Development Office, HPU, for further action within the stipulated time.
As per the university, the proposals should include historical archival such as colonial archives from departmental records and the Survey of Indian maps, records of monasteries such as at Key, Tabo, etc, trade permits, travelogues, local revenue records, historical routes and the usage overtime. The proposals should also have systematic life history interviews with elders, people in monasteries, pastoralists and Tibetan refugee communities, oral testimonies about trade, pilgrimage, intermarriage, etc, database of place-names (local, Tibetan, Sanskritised) and map changes and linguistic analysis of contestations to show the layers of cultural influence and continuity.
Other inputs that are mandatory for framing research proposals include the survey of monastery inventories, iconography, liturgical manuscripts trade goods and house/temple architecture for stylistic affinities, network analysis to show monastic patronage pilgrimage routes connecting Himachal communities to Tibetan monasteries, Evidence First Narrative Centre archival maps, oral histories and material culture before making any public claims for credibility, co-produced narrative which engage local communities, Tibetan refugee and monastery authorities and short policy briefs for the state government stressing heritage protection, sustainable border tourism and livelihoods.
Prof Mahavir Singh, Vice-Chancellor of the university, said that the MoU with the Indian Army was signed for studies, research and faculty exchange projects. “We had a meeting with Indian Army officers on March 27 and discussed with them various aspects mutually agreed upon in the MoU, including the execution of research projects on the specified area and topics,” he added.
He said, “In this context, the Dean, Planning and Teachers’ Matters, has been entrusted with the responsibility to invite preliminary proposals for scrutiny within the University of Research Projects on ‘Indo-Tibetan Linkages in Various Domains along Himachal Pradesh Border’. The shortlisted proposals will thereafter be submitted to the Indian Army for funding consideration.”
