Often called Spiti’s “fossil village”, Langza sits atop marine sediments laid down when the region was submerged under an arm of the ancient Tethys Sea during the Jurassic period. Today’s windswept plateau preserves an extraordinary archive of life from that era. The Spiti Shale and the underlying Tagling formations, exposed near the village, have yielded abundant ammonites — spiral-shelled cephalopods that are critical index fossils for dating geological strata.
Alongside ammonites, researchers have documented corals, bivalves such as Inoceramus, fragments of marine reptiles and aptychi, the jaw elements of ammonites. More than 60 species of Jurassic ammonites have been recorded from Spiti valley, with links stretching from Europe to New Zealand, underscoring the once-global reach of the Tethys Ocean.
The GSI’s designation, announced on its 176th Foundation Day, strengthens an existing legal framework. Fossils are already protected under the Antiquities and Art Treasures Act, 1972, and the Himachal Pradesh High Court in 2024 directed authorities to curb fossil smuggling in the region. Geo-heritage status now adds layers of protection, including stricter environmental clearances for development, the possibility of no-mining zones and enhanced monitoring through fencing or patrols.
Despite these measures, threats persist. Natural erosion and rockfalls can both expose and destroy fossils, while human interference remains a concern. Going forward, authorities are expected to prioritise scientific excavation, detailed documentation and community-led geotourism.
With sustained protection and local participation, Langza could evolve into a model fossil park and potentially earn recognition as a UNESCO Global Geopark.
