The bridge, being constructed over the Chambi Khad on the Dhanotu–Laleta–Banu road, was close to completion when it suddenly gave way.
Fortunately, no casualties were reported. However, the collapse has raised red flags about the structural integrity of the design. Inside sources revealed that recent heavy rainfall had probably weakened the supporting shuttering, causing settlement that gave way under pressure.
Chief Engineer North Vikas Sood, while speaking to The Tribune, stated that incessant downpour led to ponding, resulting in settlement beneath the structure and ultimately triggering the collapse.
He clarified that only the superstructure collapsed, while the abutments remained intact. The bridge was part of a Rs 9.7-crore project that also included six kilometres of road construction. An inquiry team has already been constituted to examine technical lapses and departmental responsibility.
Shahpur MLA Kewal Singh Pathania immediately rushed to the spot with senior Public Works Department officials. After reviewing the damage, he ordered an independent high-level probe to determine the precise cause and ensure strict action against any negligence.
The incident has renewed calls for stronger quality control and closer monitoring of public infrastructure projects in the region.
