In Mandi district, several places in the Karsog region were hit by hailstorms. The Kharapatthar and Sharontha areas of Rohru subdivision in Shimla district also witnessed hailstorms, damaging apple crops at many places. Anti-hail nets installed in orchards to protect the fruit crop were reportedly torn due to the intensity of the storm. Shimla town itself experienced sudden evening showers accompanied by strong winds.
Short spells of heavy rainfall were reported from Kotli, Sarkaghat and Sujanpur in Mandi district, Ani in Kullu district and Reckong Peo in Kinnaur district. Several parts of Sirmaur district received heavy rain during the previous night, resulting in a sharp fall in temperatures.
Dharamsala recorded the steepest drop in maximum temperature, which fell by five degrees Celsius to 30°C. Shimla recorded a four-degree decline with the maximum settling at 25°C, while Manali’s temperature dropped by 4.8 degrees to 24.6°C. Minimum temperatures also witnessed a notable fall. Nahan recorded a five-degree drop in minimum temperature, which settled at 18°C.
The Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for thunderstorms and strong winds in 10 districts on Saturday, excluding Kinnaur and Lahaul-Spiti. Wind speeds may reach up to 50 kmph in some areas. Rough weather conditions are likely to continue on May 31 with chances of light rain at isolated places. Though the western disturbance is expected to weaken from June 1, light rain may persist in mid and higher hills till June 2, while light drizzle is also likely over higher mountains on June 3 and 4.
