The decision was taken at a meeting of the Cabinet sub-committee chaired by Revenue, Horticulture and Tribal Development Minister Jagat Singh Negi on Wednesday. Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Minister Anirudh Singh and Public Works Minister Vikramaditya Singh also attended the meeting.
The panel, constituted to explore measures for reducing congestion in Shimla, the Baddi-Barotiwala-Nalagarh (BBN) industrial belt and district headquarters across the state, discussed plans for relocating wholesale markets and developing new urban infrastructure.
A major focus of the meeting was the proposed township in the BBN region and the development of a satellite town on the lines of Chandigarh. Officials informed the committee that 7,042 bighas of land had already been consolidated for the project. The panel also reviewed traffic congestion in Shimla and examined several critical bottlenecks, including Chhota Shimla, Sanjauli, Baluganj, Tutikandi, Dhalli, Kasumpti, Victory Tunnel, Talland and the Local Bus Stand areas, among others identified by the Town and Country Planning Department.
The PWD and HP Roadways Infrastructure Development authorities were directed to conduct regular inspections and prepare time-bound plans to ease congestion. The committee also discussed shifting wholesale markets that contribute to traffic pressure within the city to suitable locations along the four-lane highway outside Shimla. The Shimla SP was instructed to strengthen traffic management in Shoghi, Dhami and other key locations, prevent roadside parking and identify sites for additional parking facilities.
