Himachal: Heritage society workers to go on strike over Shimla MC’s decision to abolish 10% pay hike

The decision was taken during a meeting of the society’s union, affiliated to the Centre of Indian Trade Union (CITU), which was held in Shimla on Tuesday, in which all the workers, such as door-to-door garbage collectors, supervisors and road sweeping staff, were present.

SEHB Society Workers’ Union and CITU leader Vijender Mehra condemned the decision and termed it as the dictatorship of the civic body’s administration. He said the three percent dearness allowance (DA) announced instead of the 10 percent annual salary increment will result in a loss of Rs 700 to Rs 1,000 per month in the future for every worker. They have called for a decisive movement from the Sahib workers against this.

Accusing the corporation of being anti-labour, he said that every year, it hikes garbage collection fees, water supply rates and property tax by 10 percent; however, instead of spending these funds for the betterment of the SEHB Society’s workers, the corporation’s administration diverts these funds to wasteful expenditure.

“The workload of society’s workers has quadrupled in the last few years. The number of houses they work in has increased from 80 to 300. However, instead of increasing their salaries, their 10 percent annual salary increase has been abolished and a three percent DA has been implemented, which is inconsistent. This three percent DA should have been in addition to the ten percent annual salary increase. The Municipal Corporation administration has needlessly spent Rs. 2.5 crore on QR codes, which could have employed 150 new workers and reduced the workload of existing workers,” he said.

Mehra said the workers have decided to intensify their movement against this decision and during the strike, no worker will do their job, which will affect the cleanliness system in Shimla.
