Himachal HC issues notices over ‘unsafe drugs’ manufactured in hill state

The court has directed the State Drug Authority and key Central regulatory bodies, including the Drug Controller General of India and the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation, to respond to the concerns raised in the petition. Notices have also been issued to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

The proceedings stem from a communication received in the office of the Chief Justice, highlighting that 26 drugs manufactured by 19 pharmaceutical firms in industrial hubs such as Baddi, Solan, Paonta Sahib and Kangra may pose risks to public health and safety.

Taking cognisance of the communication, a Division Bench comprising Chief Justice Gurmeet Singh Sandhawalia and Justice Bipin Chander Negi also noted related media reports, underscoring the seriousness and wider public implications of the issue.

By issuing notices, the court has sought responses from the authorities on steps taken to prevent the manufacture and distribution of the flagged drugs and on the regulatory mechanisms in place to ensure drug safety and quality compliance.
