Himachal Governor urges innovation-driven research to boost farm economy

He was addressing the 17th convocation ceremony of Chaudhary Sarwan Kumar Himachal Pradesh Agricultural University, Palampur, through virtual mode from Lok Bhavan. President Droupadi Murmu was earlier scheduled to attend the event, but her visit was cancelled due to inclement weather.

In his address, the Governor emphasised the importance of developing a scientific temperament among students, stating that it would help make farmers self-reliant, enhance agricultural productivity and contribute to overall economic growth.

Congratulating the graduating students and gold medallists, he described the convocation as a significant milestone marking the transition from formal education to real-world application of knowledge. He urged graduates to recognise their responsibilities towards society and use their expertise for public good.

Highlighting the university’s legacy, Gupta noted that its alumni have made notable contributions across fields in India and abroad. He said the institution has remained relevant through impactful research and academic excellence.

Referring to the state’s agrarian profile, he pointed out that nearly 90 per cent of the rural population depends on agriculture and allied sectors, while about 62 per cent of the workforce is engaged in these activities. He added that the sector contributes around 9.4 per cent to the state’s Gross Domestic Product, underscoring the importance of research and innovation in ensuring economic stability.

The Governor lauded the university’s achievements in research, innovation and extension activities, stating that they reflect a strong commitment to rural development and nation-building.

He said scientific advancements must move beyond laboratories to farmers’ fields to ensure tangible benefits for the farming community.

Degrees across various disciplines were conferred during the ceremony, marking academic achievement and reinforcing the university’s role in shaping the future of agriculture in the state and beyond.
