The blaze was first noticed by workers at the gaushala, who spotted smoke rising from the stored fodder. The management committee was immediately alerted, following which the fire brigade station at Jawali was informed. Firefighters rushed to the spot and, with assistance from gaushala staff and committee members, launched efforts to control the flames.
Despite sustained firefighting operations throughout the day, the fire could not be completely contained till late evening due to the highly combustible nature of dry fodder. According to Seva Dal activists Manjeet Koundal and Anil Changu, nearly 850 quintals of fodder stored in sheds at the gaushala were engulfed in the blaze. The entire stock has been rendered unusable.
Jawali SDM Narinder Jaryal visited the site to assess the damage. He confirmed that the complete fodder stock had been destroyed and estimated the loss at around Rs 10 lakh. He also appealed to the public to extend financial assistance to the Seva Dal, which has been managing the gaushala on a voluntary basis.
The gaushala, built by the state government, was handed over to the Seva Dal last year after the authorities were unable to operate it directly. Since then, the facility, capable of housing around 500 abandoned and stray cattle from the lower Kangra region, has been functioning effectively under the organisation’s management.
The incident has dealt a severe blow to the gaushala’s resources, with the loss of fodder posing an immediate challenge to sustaining the cattle housed there.
