Dr Milap, Principal, Tanda medical college, said the State Health Department had released the funds long back, but not a single elevator had been installed or made functional till date. The delay has raised serious questions about administrative efficiency and coordination between departments. Manish, Executive Engineer, PWD, said the installation of three elevators was already in process, while the remaining four would also be installed soon.
The delay has sparked resentment among patients, attendants and local residents, who have accused the department of negligence and apathy towards public healthcare needs. The absence of elevators in the multi-storey hospital building has become a major problem, particularly for critically ill patients, senior citizens, differently-abled persons and pregnant women, who are compelled to use staircases to move between wards and departments.
Patients visiting the hospital said shifting seriously ill persons from one floor to another had become a difficult and risky task. Attendants are often seen carrying patients manually on stretchers or wheelchairs through narrow staircases. Many patients from remote and rural areas of Kangra, Chamba and Hamirpur districts expressed disappointment over the slow pace of infrastructure development at one of the state’s premier health institutions.
Dr Rajendra Prasad Government Medical College is the second-largest medical college-cum-hospital in Himachal after the IGMC-Shimla, catering to the healthcare needs of lakhs of residents from six major districts of the state. Hundreds of patients visit the institution daily for specialised treatment, emergency services and surgeries. However, the lack of essential facilities such as elevators has exposed patients and attendants to unnecessary suffering.
Locals and social organisations have urged the state government to intervene and ensure the immediate installation of elevators in the hospital complex. They said modern healthcare institutions cannot function efficiently without basic infrastructure and warned that continued negligence could adversely affect patient care and emergency services.
