Initially, BJP- and Congress-backed candidates had secured four seats each, resulting in a tie in Ward No. 1. The fate of candidates Nandini Sood and Minakshi Sharma was decided through a draw of lots, in which Nandini Sood emerged victorious.
The BJP, which had earlier failed to gain control of the key municipal council, received a shot in the arm after Congress-backed leader Thakur Dass Sharma joined the party weeks before the civic body elections were announced. He was among the prominent winners supported by the BJP, along with Seema Sharma, Ram Dhyan Singh and Rajni Singla.
The Congress-backed candidates who won the elections include Monisha Sharma, Nisha Sharma, Sushma Gupta and Mohan Lal Azad.
Former BJP cabinet minister Rajiv Saizal termed the result a victory of the BJP’s organisational strength. He also alleged that people, frustrated with the corruption of the Congress government, had voted in favour of the BJP.
BJP-backed candidates retain dominance in Kandaghat Nagar Panchayat
BJP-supported candidates continued their dominance in the Kandaghat Nagar Panchayat elections by winning five of the seven seats, while Congress-backed candidates managed to secure only two seats.
In the 2021 elections as well, the BJP had secured a majority by winning six out of seven seats, while Congress-backed candidates could win only one seat.
The BJP-supported candidates who emerged victorious this time include Ravi Sethi, Rajkumar, Rajita, Neeraj and Monika Pandit.
BJP district president Rattan Pal termed the result a mandate reflecting public resentment against the ruling Congress government. He alleged that the Congress had been misleading people during its more than three years in power.
