Initially, BJP- and Congress-backed candidates had secured four seats each, resulting in a tie in Ward No. 1. The fate of candidates Nandini Sood and Minakshi Sharma was decided through a draw of lots, in which Nandini Sood emerged victorious.

The BJP, which had earlier failed to gain control of the key municipal council, received a shot in the arm after Congress-backed leader Thakur Dass Sharma joined the party weeks before the civic body elections were announced. He was among the prominent winners supported by the BJP, along with Seema Sharma, Ram Dhyan Singh and Rajni Singla.

The Congress-backed candidates who won the elections include Monisha Sharma, Nisha Sharma, Sushma Gupta and Mohan Lal Azad.

Former BJP cabinet minister Rajiv Saizal termed the result a victory of the BJP’s organisational strength. He also alleged that people, frustrated with the corruption of the Congress government, had voted in favour of the BJP.
