A revolving gate on one of entrances to the park was damaged six months ago. The residents claim that despite repeated requests the MC has failed to install a new iron gate, which has been lying in a corner of the park. With no gate in place, stray animals can easily enter the park. The alleged negligence has sparked resentment among the residents, children and senior citizens.
Once a vibrant recreational hub frequented by families and fitness enthusiasts, the park now presents a picture of neglect and disrepair. Swings installed by the Municipal Council are in a poor condition due to the lack of timely maintenance. Expressing concern over sorry state of affairs, the residents said families, children and elderly citizens have stopped visiting the park, which was once among most popular public spaces of the town.
The park was developed during 2016-17 with the efforts of former MLA Ajay Mahajan. The Municipal Council had invested substantial funds to transform the area into a multi-purpose recreational facility equipped with swings, open-air gym, two entry gates, a pedestrian path, dustbins and well-maintained lawns. However, the residents allege that years of neglect has reduced the park to a shelter for stray animals.
Besides serving as a recreational facility, the park is an important venue for community functions, including marriages, ‘bhandaras’ and the annual Ramlila performance. A covered cemented stage was specially constructed to host such events. The residents further pointed out that water seepage along the sides of the park has emerged as an additional concern.
Following the public demand, the MC had awarded a tender worth Rs 85,598 on March 23 for repair and maintenance of the park. However, the work has reportedly not commenced so far. Former MC chairperson and councillor Rajni Mahajan alleged that even as the tender was awarded before the Model Code of Conduct for the civic body polls was enforced, the execution of the work was halted under political pressure from the ruling party.
When contacted, Rajesh Chaudhary, Assistant Engineer, Nurpur MC, said the work will be started at the earliest.
