The nomination window will open on April 29 and close on May 2, leaving a narrow timeframe for aspirants to complete the formalities. The urgency is compounded by the May 1 holiday, effectively reducing the available working days to two if parties fail to announce candidates on the first day.
The Solan MC comprises 17 wards. Currently, the Congress holds a slight edge with nine councillors, while the BJP has eight and one seat is with an Independent. Despite its numerical advantage, the Congress faced internal discord during the previous tenure. While it managed to secure the Mayor’s post twice over the five-year term, factionalism within the party allowed the BJP to capture the Deputy Mayor’s position for half the duration.
Determined to avoid a repeat, the Congress leadership is pushing for consensus across all wards to present a united front. The party aims not only to retain control but also to prevent internal divisions from undermining its electoral prospects.
On the other hand, the BJP, which narrowly lost the MC last time, is leaving little to chance. After conducting meetings across all wards, the party has shortlisted 51 candidates from a pool of 92 applicants. The final list will now be reviewed by the state leadership, including senior functionaries, before candidates are declared.
State BJP president Dr Rajiv Bindal stated that a detailed selection process was undertaken, with inputs gathered from block and district levels and assured that final names would be announced shortly. Meanwhile, senior Congress leader and minister Harshwardhan Chauhan has been engaging with ticket aspirants in Solan and Shimla to gather feedback and strengthen the party’s strategy.
The Congress Election Committee is scheduled to meet on April 29 in Dharamsala to finalise its candidates, setting the stage for a closely contested civic poll.
